40 days Gratitude Challenge

Hi friends! I've decided to dust off the blog and put it to good use. I'm so glad you're joining me in this gratitude challenge!

Our first day is tomorrow! Are you ready? I am! I'm praying that this will be such a life changing time in our lives. I think the Lord will move and stir up our hearts and we will be drawn to Him and see His workmanship in all things.

We finished up our last day of school Thursday and had a celebratory day Friday. I feel like I have a weight lifted off of me and I'm free to spend time doing the stuff around my home I've fallen behind on, but what I'm most excited about is not having to rush through my time with God in the mornings.

This challenge is something I really need right now. This last year has been hard for me, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. So taking 40 days to focus on me and my relationship with Jesus, and not having to feel that #momguilt will be ah-mazing! Well, let's be honest, I'll still feel that #momguilt, but maybe not as bad. Ha!

I want you all to know that this challenge doesn't have to be profound. The things you write down everyday don't have to be these glorious huge things. They can simply just be gifts that you're thankful for.

•Lord, thank you for the amazing dinner we had, and the ability to prepare it for my family.
•Lord, thank you for a messy home, because there are children here, children you blessed me with.
•Lord, thank you for the laughter that fills my home.
•Lord, thank you for the birds chirping, because they make me think of you.

Those are just a few. I'm quite sure that I'll see some things repeated in my book, and that's totally fine! That just means I'm really grateful for those things!

Don't fret about things to write down. The Lord will lay them on your heart. I'm very excited to just be still and listen.

I think we'll all be amazed at how quickly our notebooks fill up!

You can leave a comment here or on my Instagram page and use the hashtag #summergratitudechallenge. I'm very excited to follow along in this journey with you!

Hey Beautiful,

This morning my trainer tagged me in a picture that was everything that I needed to hear today. Funny how that works out.

Before my workout this morning I took some new measurements so I could see how much progress I've made, according to the tape measure. In a little over a month it's been 2 inches. I told myself, "Two inches is still wonderful. It's better than gaining two inches. Be proud of that."

I got done with my workout this morning and read these words:

Can I get an Amen? Perfection! I have a love/hate relationship with social media. Because of it I have gained some pretty great people in my life, my trainer one of them, but it's also the perfect place to find discontentment about yourself. We see so many rockin bodies and we get envious. We see sayings like, "don't settle for mediocre," and so we start doubting ourselves. We wonder if we are settling because we aren't trying to kill ourselves to get to the next level.

Just because we are in the process of getting that rockin body, or whatever it is you're chasing after, doesn't mean we're settling for mediocre. This is what I've been telling myself. We all have different goals in mind. I have just really had to back off and tell myself, you are enough! I may not be where I want to be with every aspect of my life, but I'm so far from where I once was.

Maybe this is as good as my body will ever look. Will that be enough for me? It should be. I will keep working hard to stay healthy, and if it changes then that is incredible, but if it doesn't, then that should be incredible too. It has birthed 4 children, it has nursed 3 babies, it has withstood a lot of pain, and it's still going.  I have battle wounds to reflect just how much it's been through, and it's far from perfect.

There is still body fat on it, there are freckles that are all over it. There are these little lines that are starting to show around my eyes, but I'm not going to dislike myself any longer. I'm proud of myself and I'm loving the changes that are happening.

I want to show my daughters that if you don't like something about yourself, you have the power to change that. I want to give them self confidence to know that doesn't mean undergoing any kind of plastic surgery. They don't have to be "perfect," I don't have to "perfect," you don't have to be "perfect" to be beautiful. We are all beautiful, we just have to believe that about ourselves.

I am beautiful, just the way I am. Beauty isn't reflected on what size my waist is, what the number on the scale is, or even how perfect my skin is. It's reflected on the way I live. The way I love. The way I treat people.

One thing I've learned for sure is how you can start with one goal, and it escalates from there. I've reached a place where I have realized just how important it is to love myself through all stages of my journey. Not just when I feel I've "arrived" at where I want to be.

Do I still beat myself up sometimes and think I'm not doing good enough because I haven't made as much progress as so and so on the flipping Internet? Yes! I'm ridiculous like that sometimes. I'm real. I'm not going to lie about it. I doubt myself, and where does it get me? Nowhere! Absolutely nowhere. We're all different. Our journeys are different. Our bodies are different.

I'm sure we can all agree on one thing though, we all want to be happy and healthy. So let's do that. Leave some encouragement for someone today. You know how much you need it. They're no different.

Until NextTime,

Give Yourself A Little Grace

Grace. I'm soaking in the sweetness of these 5 letters lately....

I had a blog post typed up for you, and then life happened and the post changed direction. We are in the last five weeks of homeschool and can I just say how READY I AM for summer?!!! R.E.A.D.Y.

Sometimes life can just make you feel a little stretched and frazzled. Anybody else feel a little stretched thin sometimes? I spent my weekend filling up my tank, because it's been low. Way low. I'm refreshed and rejuvenated since I took some time to really invest in me and fill my soul.

The words Grace have meant so much to me lately that I decided to hang the letters on my wall where I can see it from every angle in my living room/kitchen area. They are a sweet reminder that on the hard days, the days where I may feel like my bad moments make a bad mama, I have this sweetness of Grace covering me.

I don't have to be perfect all the time and have everything together. I'm being humbled and learning that sometimes it's really okay to hit that roadblock and not know which direction I'm supposed to turn. I'm learning to be still and listen.

I just want to encourage you today that bad moments don't make bad mamas/wives/girlfriends/friends, etc. We all need to allow ourselves Grace, and the opportunity to grow. I don't know about you, but I haven't done much growing when I think I already know everything. I like to know that I'm not alone in the beautiful chaos of this life. That things don't have to be "perfect" all the time and we can still be happy!

I know some of you may not have children, but I'm sure you've still got a plate full with this crazy thing we call LIFE! When we reach that place where we say, "Whoa...what's happening here?"  It's okay to step back and give yourself Grace and Be Still.

Have a wonderful week, friends. We have so much to be thankful for. Let us strive for less perfection and a lot more love and kindness. Give yourself the Grace you deserve and not feel guilty for not being "perfect", whatever that is.

Until Next time,

Sometimes Mama Needs Forgiveness

I just needed to take a minute to remind myself why I have decided to travel down this road of homeschooling. It's not because I need my kids with me at every moment to feel like I'm a good mother. It actually has nothing to do with me and everything to do with them.

There are several reasons that I have written about before, and probably will again in the future. But today, oh today, I was given a reminder just why I chose the hard stuff.

There she sat doing her math. Taylor had already breezed right through hers, and Mackenzie was just not wanting to do hers. "I need help! Nobody will help me!" I told her she knew what she needed to do, and she just needed to do it. I'm not going to sit and give her the answers, plus she knows the stuff she was doing. She just didn't want to do it.

Seems like everyday someone "just can't do it". That's ok, I'm getting this figured out now, we'll sort-of, ok not really, but I'll try to pretend. Ha!

She was really angry. I just didn't understand why. She bit the eraser off her pencil, and was just being nasty. I asked her what was wrong and it went from "you won't help me...nobody likes me, you said I'm the messiest child, and you don't love me..."

She lost it. She was just crying and crying. I picked her up and told her "you are the most perfect little girl. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and whether you're a little messy sometimes does not determine your worth and will never make me stop loving you!"

Our conversation went on for a little while with me reminding her of her strengths, and just how much I love her. I didn't realize how much my comment to her Grandma about her being messy really bothered her. It wasn't even something that happened recently, but she had obviously bottled those feelings up inside and they came out today. This gave me an opportunity to ask her for forgiveness, and reassure her of how much I love her.

Had she of not been with me, and at public school, this probably would have played out differently. It would have come across as her being disobedient and she would have gotten in trouble.

I was reminded today that in every moment I'm teaching and training my children. We all mess up, and we all make mistakes, even Mamas. My words have the ability to build up or break down. Even something as little as saying she was messy, broke her down, and maybe you're thinking she's just sensitive or played me for a fool, but that's not how it really is. Even if she's just overly sensitive, that is just the way she is, and I have to accept that. I don't want to change the way God made her. I want her to know that her feelings matter and we need to release them in a healthy way.

We finished up our hugs and kisses and she finished up her math lesson in about 10 minutes, with much confidence.

This homeschool thing isn't about me at all. I sacrifice daily to give them the best that I possibly can. It's tough. They drive me up the wall somedays, but every bit of it is worth it. Even the messy house and sometimes sticky floor (thanks to the jar of pickles somebody dropped today).

I wouldn't trade it for anything. Before I know it this will all just be a distant memory and my house will be so clean and there will be no noise. #thisisnow

Living With Intention

A couple weeks ago I felt God give me a little nudge and a thought for a potential name change for my social media identity. I guess what I have now is too boring? ;)

I feel there have been so many changes that I've made in my personal growth in these last few months, that maybe it is time for a name change.

6 1/2 years ago I became a mother and thought I would be able to remember all of the memories we created. Fast forward to now and I can't even remember last week. I remember the big things, but not the little things that make up our days. Those little things is what makes up my life.

The new words that the twins have learned how to read. How M got over her fear of riding her bike, how C is saying a new word everyday. How T taught herself how to shoot hoops. I want to remember them. This is now.

Staying home and raising 3 kids all while homeschooling is no easy feat. God doesn't give twins to be parented by the fainthearted, much less homeschool them--together. While I'm not a single parent, I'm still the one doing 80% of the parenting around here, since I'm the one with them 24/7. It just comes with the territory. I'm totally okay with that, because this is what I've been led to do...but somedays we are in the trenches. Deep. I'm not going to hide it. What's the point? Why would I want to give the perception life is peachy keen and my house is always perfect? Uh. Not hardly.

We still have days where I count it a success that all three kids are still alive when I shut their door at night. Can I get an Amen?

There is more to this everyday life than just making it through the day-and sometimes trenches. There is purpose. There is purpose in the good, bad, and the ugly. There is purpose in the trenches. There is a bigger picture. There is growth to be had.

I want to live my days with intention. I want to go to bed at night and know that even in the midst of the good, and the bad days, I did my best. I have been called to do extraordinary things. I want to be intentional with what God has given me, and I want to remember the moments. All of them.

I want to spend my days more focused on my daughters' hearts than whether or not the dishes are put away. I want to feed their interests, and their self esteem. I want to grow with them. Everyday we have the opportunity to grow and change. I don't want to stay the same. I want to be an intentional mother. Focus on the now, today. This is it.

This is a process. I can't just make it happen overnight. I wish I could, but that's not the way life works. I know we're still going to have good and bad days because that's life, and it's a beautiful messy life that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

I decided that I needed to document my days so I can reflect back upon them later.

I ordered this cute little Mom's One Line A Day memory book from amazon. I can jot down a quick line before bed about the most memorable and most important moment of the day. I really like that it doesn't need to be much. Short and sweet, just how I like it.

The next two things are a planner and a journal. My intentions for the planner is to write down the scripture I read that day that spoke to me the most. It's already dated, so I will be more eager to pick it up and write a quick note. The journal is just for anything else I need to write about. I'm TERRIBLE at journaling, but I have hopes that these two tools will help me to stay on course.

Back to the name change idea....

I've been a little skeptical of the name that was put in my head. I wasn't sure it made a lot of sense. I've thought a lot about it these last couple weeks, and the more I think about it, the more I think it seems fitting at this point in my life.

          Intentional Erica

Give me some feedback....what do you think?

I would also really love to know if you journal and what you use. Anything specific to make it more fun?

Until next time..XO

A New Leaf

I'm so sorry I've been absent from the blog. I just felt like maybe the blog world wasn't for me anymore. I have plenty to say, but that doesn't mean others will want to read what my thoughts are. There is a reason my blog is called Ramblings of a Redheaded Mama...you never know what I'm going to talk about!

I've had several people encourage me to get back into it. I do my best blogging when I just start typing when the thoughts are flowing. That tends to happen at the most inopportune times...like mid workout! Not the most ideal time to start blogging. Ha!

Since I have deleted my Facebook, I wasn't sure how my posts would reach any readers. I didn't want to invest time and energy into blogging...just for cyberspace. I also don't blog about one topic in particular. I have a variety of interests, so I don't want to pick just one and only talk about that.

I had previously thought about deleting all my old posts, because they are just that-old; but then I thought maybe I needed to leave them. They are a part of me, and my growth as a woman, wife and mother, and it may be good for me to reflect upon that later on.

So I'm asking you a favor. :) If you read something you like, hit that share button at the bottom of the page, and drop me a line. I love to hear from my readers!

I have a few fun things up my sleeve. A couple DIY tutorials, and a few other topics that are already on my mind.

You can also read my posts on nobellagrace.blogspot.com, as I'm a guest blogger for her there. Fun things lie ahead and I'm wanting share the fun with y'all!

Until next time...XO

Putting On Your Oxygen Mask

I want to let you in on a little secret that has revolutionized my life....

You know when you're on an airplane and the attendant tells you that in case of an emergency to "put on your oxygen mask first, before assisting others?"  Let me tell you how this applies to your everyday life!

While this post isn't about me, it's about YOU, I feel the best way for me to paint you a visual is by telling you my story.

Last year I had come to a conclusion that it was time I started making time for myself. I found myself overwhelmed by my days, my weight, and I just couldn't seem to find time to do anything that I wanted to do. We were just beginning our first year of homeschooling, and it was a bit freaky. How would I get it all done? It being, taking care of 3 kids, a house, 5 acres, schooling, and fitting some time for myself in there.

My days were full of taking care of everyone but myself. I had been trying to heal from bulging discs in my back for almost a year by this point. It was defeating to be in pain everyday.

I came to the realization that in order for me to have time for myself, I was going to have to MAKE time, and that meant rearranging my day. Sometimes we get so caught up in all the hats that we wear, that we forget to meet the needs of ourselves first. I have been so guilty of that!

Now, we are all different, our lives are different, so our days look different, but one thing remains the same for all of us, we are all women, and we are the only person who can take care of us.

We spend our days taking care of everyone else, whether that be your boss, your significant other, children, parents, etc., when do YOU make the list?

In my case, it was maybe later. Maybe after the kids are in bed. Maybe after the laundry is done. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.

No more maybes. NOW! It starts now. You are SO important, and you matter more than you think you do.

Perhaps you're thinking, "when would I be able to fit me in?" "I don't have time to do anything for me." Uh, yes you do! It just has to be of importance to you. If you're waiting to "find time," it's never going to happen. You have to MAKE time. We all have 24 hours in a day, it's all in how you utilize that time.

For me, I decided to start my day at least 2 hours before my children wake up. Now, I'm not a morning person. I would much rather lay in bed until I have to get up, but clearly that wasn't working for me and my happiness anymore. I had to make a change. For me. Because I matter. It matters so much for me to be Erica first and foremost. I don't want to lose site of that person.  These children are only in my house for a short amount of time, and while I adore being a stay at home mom, they deserve to have the best version of me possible.

A woman who loves herself enough to take control of her life-body, mind, and spirit. A woman who says, you are so important. If you want something bad enough, you'll make it happen. Even if it means waking up before most and doing something to empower YOU!

I'm not saying you have to start your day two hours earlier than your norm, I'm just sharing what has worked for me thus far. Somedays I could get away with starting 3-4 hours early, but getting enough sleep is just as important to me.

So write down a few things that are important to you that you can't seem to find time for, and take a look at your day and rearrange it so you can make time! I highly encourage focusing on growing your spirit, mind, and getting a little exercise in. You seriously won't regret the decision!

My decision to make time for myself first thing in the mornings has made an incredible impact on my day. I fill my tank first and foremost, then I'm able to fill everyone else's. When I don't fill my tank, I'm left dry and cranky. Anybody else feel that way by the end of the day??

You have to put your own oxygen mask on before assisting others. I leave you with this...

Thank You

This was me this morning during worship at church. The tears were running down my face. I was wiping them away with my eyes closed, trying to hide them.

The baby reaches up and lays a big fat wet kiss on my lips. My eyes open and I smile. I know she wants her pacifier so I reach for it and I give it to her. Then she wants her blankie so she can lay her head down on my shoulder. Once she's settled, I close my eyes and raise my hand to finish worshipping.

Someone lays their hand on my shoulder and starts speaking life into my ear. She says she seen God through me as I received my kiss and tended to the baby. Giving her just what she needed without her even needing to ask.  Isn't that what God does for us too?

I'm not even sure of everything else she said because the tears just poured out of my eyes. She said "you are doing a great job, you are so beautiful."

I think she was wrong, I seen God through her words. What amazing encouragement for a mama who is just going through the motions. God used her to speak to me.

I want people to see God through me. I don't want to just be another person who is just lukewarm. I want to be on fire. I've spent many years being lukewarm. That's over. God has grabbed ahold of me, and I've let Him. That was a real struggle for me.

That part of me is over. I find comfort in knowing that I am so far from where I used to be. Those other people who are on fire for God, the ones I want to be like, they had to get there. They didn't just start there. And neither did I.

So as the tears were flowing during worship and my hand was raised and my eyes were closed, all I could do was say, "Thank You God for not giving up on me." He loves me, and I know that.

I leave you with the words of a song that has completely impacted me the last week and a half, since I first heard the song.

IF YOU OPENED MY HEART
YOU'D SEE I DON'T HAVE IT ALL TOGETHER
IF YOU TOOK ME APART
YOU'D SEE THE WORST OF ME WANTS TO GET BETTER
BUT YOU'RE CHANGING ME, PIECE BY PIECE
INTO WHO YOU'RE REALLY CALLIN ME TO BE

CHORUS
THERE'S A BEAUTY AND BEAST INSIDE OF ME
WHO I AM FIGHTING WHO I WANNA BE
BUT THROUGH THE RISE AND FALLS
THE ROLLER COASTER
I, I, I GET A LITTLE CLOSER
LIKE A CHILD WALKING IN THEIR FATHER'S SHOES
I JUST WANNA LOOK A LITTLE MORE LIKE YOU
EVERYDAY'S ANOTHER STEP FORWARD
I, I GET A LITTLE CLOSER

I, I GET A LITTLE CLOSER (X2)

LORD, I KNOW THAT IT'S TRUE
YOU'RE GONNA FINISH THIS WORK YOU STARTED
EVEN WHEN I DON'T KNOW AND IT'S MOVING SO SLOW
EVEN WHEN I FEEL NOTHING BUT BROKEN HEARTED
BUT YOU'RE CHANGING ME, PIECE BY PIECE
INTO WHO I KNOW THAT I AM GONNA TO BE

CHORUS

I, I GET A LITTLE CLOSER (X4)

ALL MY DAYS
EVERY BREATH I TAKE
WON'T YOU MAKE ME, SHAPE ME, INTO WHO YOU ARE

CHORUS

I, I GET A LITTLE CLOSER (X8)

I am selfish

This post may be a complete jumble of thoughts, but I had to get them out, so I decided this would be the place to do it. So bare with me as you read. This is just how my mind works! It's going so many different directions right now. After all this blog is called Ramblings of a Redheaded Mama. ;)

I am selfish.

Lately my mind has been so busy. God has really been laying it on my heart that I'm selfish. I'm not talking selfish like it's all about me, but selfish with my kids, my family, all the things that I have.

This is something I can't really even put into words. I'm so confused about it. There is a family that I do not personally know, but I seen the mother on Instagram, and I was intrigued. They have four children, two of them were born with a genetic disorder. The little girl had brain damage and I'm not sure about the little boy.

This family decided that it was time to let them go when God decided it was their time, instead of keeping them alive. I was just blown away. How selfless these people are. Could I make the same decision? The little girl died last week, at age 2, and I wept with the news. My heart broke for this family. I could not imagine.

Most of you don't know, but my 2 year old cousin was killed a week after his birthday in a horrible accident. He ran after his daddy because he wanted to ride in the truck with him, and his daddy didn't see him. He was ran over by the truck. It was such a traumatic thing.

I know that God never promised us a life without pain, He promised that he would guide us through the storm.  But it's still hard.

When my husband goes out of town, God likes to use that time to lay things on my heart. Last night as I was thinking about this family that I do not know, I was looking at the pictures of their little girl, and I just mourned with them. I laid in bed and cried for almost an hour. I was so sad for them, but at the same time I was happy this little girl is now running around in Heaven living the most amazing life. Something she couldn't do here.

But I felt selfish. I get so frustrated with my kids sometimes because they don't listen, or they aren't obeying, blah blah blah. All that stuff that we have to deal with on a daily basis when raising children. It all seems to get in the way of enjoying the little things. Enjoying them. They're only little so long.

I take things for granted, like watching the baby chase after the cat, and laugh her head off the whole time. Teaching the kids how to read.  There are people out there who would want nothing more than to get to do these things and here I am, so caught up with the everyday stuff that I just need to say, hey, chill and let the other stuff go.

I'm pretty hard on myself and I've been working on that over the years. I've gotten a lot better, and I'm thankful for that, but I still have a long ways to go.

So maybe I am selfish, maybe I'm not. I don't really know, but at this time in my life I feel selfish.  Or maybe it's guilty. Guilty that I have what I have while others don't. Either way, I'm just asking God to help me through all of this. Help me to see what He wants me to see.

I got a new book and I'm VERY excited about it. I'm hoping this is the book that I have been praying for. The one that will continue to get me where He is wanting me to go. I'm planning on blogging about it here, once a week, at least.

If you'd like to join in on the discussion, here is the book! There are questions to answer after each chapter.

How Many Toys Should a Child Have?

It seems we have had rain every other day for the last two weeks. This has made it to where the kids are cooped up inside, once again. We need sunshine! The kids need to go play. Don't get me wrong, I'm incredibly thankful for the rain, we really needed it, it would just be awesome if it was spaced out a little more than this. Anyways, that's not what this post is about.

Since my kids have been cooped up in the house it has come to my attention that the playroom that we spent time cleaning last week, has gone untouched. They have been spending time in their room, making it a disaster with books, blankets, stuffed animals, and building tents with their chairs that we brought up from the playroom.

This has led me to the realization that they clearly have too much stuff. Those toys and games sitting in the playroom taking up space don't have any value to them. If they were of importance to them, wouldn't you think they would go play with them? Perhaps it's because they're in the basement? There is no door closing them off from the rest of the house though. They just haven't wanted to go downstairs and play.

I've really been contemplating how I'm going to do this purge. What's important to keep? We did a purge in January this year and it was so wonderful, but there is still too much stuff inside this house.

I want to teach my kids that they don't need a bunch of stuff to make them happy. I want to teach them to take better care of their belongings, something they don't do at all right now.

They are good kids, but I want to help them grow to be amazing respectful women. My mom is constantly reminding me that they're just kids, and all kids make messes. I have two tornadoes. Things have gotten better, but I truly believe that when kids have too many things they can't take care of them all, or put them where they belong. It's overwhelming for them.

How much stuff does your child/ren have? I have to get a good feel for what is a good maximum. We are on the road to more simplifying, it just takes a lot of time and sometimes the realization that our kids and ourselves have too much stuff just doesn't sink in right away.

Share your ideas and wisdom in the comments below. I love all the advice I can get!

A Little Love and Logic Testing

It's been a little rough here on the home front today. Those who have preconceived notions that a stay at home mom has it easy, or doesn't do anything all day, is completely and utterly wrong. This is by far the hardest job I've ever done.

I'm playing a huge factor in how these little humans will be in years to come, and sometimes I make huge mistakes. Huge. At least that's how they feel to me. You know, when you lay in bed at night while your husband is snoring next to you, and you don't understand how he can fall asleep in the blink of an eye, and you're laying there thinking about all the things you did wrong that day, or didn't do for that matter.

No?

Anyways, this isn't a pity party. This is just the truth for me.

Today started out hard. Like, can I take a nap already and it's only 9:30am?- type of morning.

I had to do some disciplining to a certain child, and that didn't turn out to well. Fast forward, maybe, 2 1/2 hours.

The twins were in their room and they started arguing over whose jewelry box was whose. You know, important things.

Taylor got upset because she said Mackenzie had hers, and I told her that she didn't. So this started in to her crying, again, because she didn't like that one.  I was starting to get annoyed by the crying, again. How much can one child cry in one day? Sheesh.

I was sitting there trying to be rational with her and there came the attitude.

Then it hit me! Love & Logic! I had been reading the book just yesterday and read some really good stuff. So I decided to give it a try right then.

I followed Taylor to the hallway, where she proceeded with her crying fit. I said, "Oh Taylor, you really drain my energy when you act this way.  How are you going to put it back?" She said, "I don't know." through her tears.

I gave her some choices. She chose to vacuum. Score for mommy! I helped her get started. She was really happy to do the vacuuming for me. She vacuumed for awhile and said, "I'm done." I told her, "oh, my energy isn't quite back just yet, maybe you should do this rug too. That will help."

Now this totally felt like manipulation to me, but I did exactly like the book said  to do. After a little bit longer and she had completed the task, I told her, "Oh Taylor, all my energy is back now! You did such a good job, thank you!" She had the biggest smile on her face and we hugged and that was that.

Now I wasn't really sure if this "energy drain technique" really worked or not, since she seemed so happy to do the vacuuming for me.

A little while later, after many many times of me asking her to make her bed, she still wasn't doing it. I then said, "Oh Taylor, your draining my energy." She immediately gasped, and ran to make her bed! I couldn't believe it!!

I didn't have to raise my voice, or give her "the look", nothing. She's been her normal sweet little self since then! Shocking. Really it is. This may not be something that works every time, but you better believe I'm going to keep trying it.

Not only did it actually stick with her for longer than 2 minutes. She enjoyed it, and I didn't have to get angry, or ask 7 times, which is what really makes me angry.

So do I still feel like it was maybe a little manipulating going on? I'm not really sure. Was it better than a spanking? Oh yeah, definitely.

Has anyone else tried this Love & Logic? If so, please share with me in the comments! I would love to hear what you have tried.

A few tips to help your day run smoother

3 kids is no walk in the park with a cool breeze blowing...especially with two 5 year old tornados like I have.

I am certainly not one to give advice on how to maintain your home, but one of my goals for the new year has been to keep my house more "picked up" or "tidy", whatever your fancy is.

During the day though, when the kids are having lots of fun playing and well, just being kids, things are far from perfect, and I'm really ok with that. We try to keep the things that they drag out to a minimum, and clean up when we are done with things. This is a work and progress for all of us.

A couple of weeks ago, we did a huge clean out of the playroom. We eliminated so much stuff that they just didn't need, nor did they love anymore. It was a great feeling. Such a great feeling that I really cannot wait for spring to get here so I can have a humongous garage sale. I fully intend on getting rid of anything that we haven't used since we moved into this house in November 2011. But that's an entirely different post in itself.

Today I wanted to share a few things that I have been doing that seem to be helping things flow a little better.

1. Putting all my clean dishes away, right after I'm through washing them!

I have never ever done this, and I find that it has made a huge difference in the way my kitchen looks.

We have an open floor plan, so if my kitchen is/looks messy, then it makes the rest of my house feel messy, even when it's not. It takes me about 3 extra minutes a night to do this, and I think it's 3 minutes well served.

2. Pick up the living room before the kids go to bed.

If we have been consistent throughout the day with not dragging out more than we need, then this part doesn't take us very long. I have the twins take all of their stuff to their bedroom, it may not get put away at that moment, but we are taking baby steps here. 😉

They also help clean up Carly's toys. I have always been the one to clean up everything, but I feel that they are 5 years old now, and it's time for me to start making it a must, instead of a fight.

I tell them Mommy is not a maid, and that  it's not fair for them to expect me to clean up after them for everything. The best part about this, is 96% of the time they enjoy helping me. It is a way for me to make them feel important and needed. They love being mommy's big helper.

3. Making sure the kitchen table is clear after dinner!

This is pretty explanatory, but it makes it nice to come out to a noncluttered table in the morning for breakfast.

4. Shoes are taken to the closet as soon as we get home.

After many, many, and I cannot express the MANY times I have searched for the missing 4th shoe, I have finally got the girls to take their shoes to their closet when we get home. I generally have to ask them once, and sometimes I get one child who listens, and the other needs another reminder, but it has helped so much. Less clutter sitting around our house, and the majority of the time, I do not have to search for a shoe outside of their bedroom! SCORE!!

I know these sound minimal to some of you, and I'm sure for many of you, this is nothing new , but for me, it has been very helpful. Having two children the same age, and then having a baby, hasn't been the easiest thing for me to adjust to.

So I'm taking baby steps here. I can't change everything overnight, so it's one step at a time. For now, I'm pleased with the change these little things are making in our day to day lives.

I hope some of these ideas where helpful to you! I would love if you shared some of your helpful ideas!

Boom...

Our new year started out with a boom. A big boom. And not a good one.

11:30 pm. January 2nd, vomit covered the floor. Sheets. Pillows. Blankets. Child #1 had the tummy bug, again, for the 3rd time in 10 months. Joy.

That was a long night. Puke and a day full of a fever later, she was finally better.

Fast forward 4 days. The baby woke up for the second time that night. 3:30 am, I had just fed her and hour and a half before that. Surely she could not be hungry AGAIN!? She screams and cries. Nothing is comforting her, and then I hear the sound. Puke, coming from the other room. I open the door, with #3 on my hip, and I witness #2, puking in her just-in-case-bowl, "mama, I threw up." "Yeah baby, I can see that."

To the bathroom we go. I hold her hair back while she gets sick, all while holding the baby on my hip. Not something I ever imagined doing, but hey, a moms job is truly never over. I gave the baby to her daddy, and she screamed and cried. Only mama would do. I got #2 cleaned up and rinsed her bowl and put her back to bed. I fed the baby, again, and she finally fell asleep.

That sweet child had caught it bad. Hers lasted 2 days. Lots and lots of puke, and diarrhea, and a fever as well. Yesterday she finally felt normal and could keep food and water down. Hooray! I see the light, the tiny light at the end of the tunnel.

I cleaned the bathrooms, did laundry, and a million other chores. We all felt great. We had an amazing nights sleep, something I hadn't had in quite awhile.

Child #1 woke me up at about 1:30am. I laid with her for a few minutes, and then went back to bed. I had "hot flashes" all night, so I thought maybe I was getting sick.

6:50am, the baby wakes up crying. That tiny light at the end of the tunnel--it had burned out.  I knew I wasn't feeling too hot, and kept praying I wouldn't get sick until I nursed the baby. Halfway through, there was no time for more, I had to get her in bed fast so I could run to the bathroom. Oh my gosh. It was horrible. She screamed the entire time! How dare I take her boob away!! How selfish of me.

I called my husband while she finished nursing. He called in help from his mom. I manned the fort for 3 hours before she got here. It was not easy. Every little move made me nauseous. Finally I got the baby down for a nap, and went to my bed. The twins are old enough to keep themselves occupied without my supervision.

They have come in to "check on me" every 10 minutes it seems like {and that's a big exaggeration, it's more like every 3 minutes, but I'm lucky they love me so much}.

Fortunately, as of right now, the vomiting was only a one time deal. I'm praying it stays that way, but I'm still making trips to the bathroom about every 10-20 minutes.

My main concern is Carly getting this nasty junk, and my milk supply. I'm not able to eat anything, and my fluid intake is considerably low compared to normal.

We had been using thieves oil, but that didn't seem to protect the rest of us from getting this. I plan on difussing the oil, once I get my Grandmas difusser from her.

Do you have suggestions for keeping my milk supply up while sick? This is certainly not any fun.

{I also just locked the door, so maybe, just maybe, I can be left alone for a little bit.} Ha! That's doubtful. They'll be beating on the door crying in just a bit.

The joys of motherhood.

It Takes A Village

I think the African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child", is completely true!

In my 5 years of parenting I have sought out the advice and help from lots of people. Whether it be from family members, non family members, google, or books. I humbly admit that I do not know it all.

During pregnancy we have so much made up in our minds on what we will do and what we won't do. I'm sure we have all said, "oh I will NEVER do that!" and yet we have found ourselves doing that said thing. It's ok! Really it is.

I will admit that when my twins were probably about 18 months, I began to feel that everything that I thought I knew was all wrong. I started venturing out and reading and gaining all sorts of information on different topics. My husband and I decided that we were going to go against the norm and do things a little differently.

You know what the cool part is? It's totally ok to do that too! These are our children and we can do whatever we feel is best for them.

The fun part is through this village of people we have found people who believe in our different ways and people who do things completely opposite of us.  I think it's fabulous. I have learned so much from other moms.

Nobody is born wise. ~ African proverb

God gave these women to us, whether they're the same age as us, or 30 years older than us, to be our mentors. I love that I am continuously learning every single day of my life. I have the honor to gain knowledge from so many different people and learn through them as well. I may not choose to use everything they share with me at the time, and that's ok too.

I am incredibly grateful for that friend I can call or text when I'm going off the deep end and I'm blowing something so trivial out of proportion. That friend who tells me to come get keifer because she knows it will make my baby feel better.

My mom who I can send a crazy message to and ask what I'm doing so wrong?!! The friends at church who I know will always pray for me when I ask. The grandparents who come take the oldest two when I need a little breather.

And all the people who love my children unconditionally. It means so much to me!

People have come and gone in our "village," and I know there will be many more that come and go too.  I believe that God gives us just what we need when we need it.  And often times that "what" is usually in the form of a person.  I don't want to be so set in my ways that I can't embrace what God is trying to give me through someone else.

If you are filled with pride, then you will have no room for wisdom. ~ African proverb

I don't think I have ever had so many people in my life that I adore so much! Thank you to my village.  I love you all so much!

A few updates, and a look at what's to come

It's been pretty quiet on the blog for a few months. I'm not sure if I even have any readers out there! I apologize my friends!

I haven't had a lot of rambles that I've needed to share. I had way more than I wish I would of had while I was pregnant with Carly. Boy, that was such a hard time for me.

Anywho, I'm just going to share a few iPhone pictures of what's been happening in my life lately, but first I'm going to share a few ideas of posts that I plan on talking about soon.

•We are going to start the girls in Kindergarten after the first of the year. I'm not 100% positive which program I'm going to go with, but I've got a pretty good idea.

•Why we are simplifying Christmas this year.

•How my Bible study is making me feel like I'm actually making progress at being the mom I'm meant to be.

These are just a few ideas that I've got up my sleeve. They will appear on the blog when I feel like The Lord has told me just what to say.

If you have ideas on what you'd like to see here, leave them in the comments. I'd love to hear them!

Hearty Meatloaf

I found this recipe years ago in a cookbook, but I have no idea which one it was! I just know that I love it, but I think my girls love it even more than I do. I would make it more often than I do now, but my husband HATES meatloaf! How could a person hate meatloaf?!! I don't understand.

 Here you go:

2 pounds ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove
2 medium eggs, organic preferably
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1/4 cup ketchup
2 T. Worchestershire sauce
2 tsp. Salt
1 T. Paprika
1 tsp. Dried parsley
1 tsp. Black pepper

Glaze
1/4 cup brown sugar, coconut sugar, or evaporated cane juice
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tsp dijon mustard
1 tsp dry mustard

There isn't any fancy way to mix this all together. Just mix all the ingredients together, except the glaze. Put the meat in a 9 x 13 dish. Mix the glaze ingredients together and top the meat mixture with it. Bake in a 400* preheated oven for 1 hour.

 Enjoy!

My Menu For The Week

This is what's on the menu for the week. I don't ever put a day to a meal, because it really just depends on what sounds good to me at the moment.

I have most of the meat thawing right now. These are just dinner ideas, because the girls and I generally just eat leftovers or something really easy. I don't generally cook lunch, because there is no need too when we have plenty of leftovers in the fridge, and let's be honest, I don't enjoy cooking 3 meals a day.

*Spicy Italian Beef*

*Jambalaya*

*Roasted Chicken*

*Alfredo*

*Spaghetti, or Cowboy Spaghetti*

*Meatloaf*

*Salmon or Tilapia*
I also have yogurt going in the crockpot right now. Chicken broth will be made after we have the roasted chicken.

I just made granola balls, and tomorrow I will be making Strawberry Cupcakes with fresh whipped cream on top. Tonight we will have root beer floats with fresh homemade ice cream from raw milk for dessert. Yummo!!!!

A few breakfast meals this week:

*Sausage breakfast burritos*

*Baked Amish Oatmeal*

What's on your menu this week?

I have a confession to make...

I have a confession to make. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ever had these thoughts...

Before I became pregnant with Carly, my husband and I were not really sure if we wanted any more children. I didn't know if I wanted to go through all of "it" again. Out of my two pregnancies, they were both far from perfect. So I was a little scared to do it all again.

I had also talked to my husband about whether it would be selfish. I didn't know if it would be selfish to give our daughters another sibling, someone they had to share us with even more. I didn't know if it would be selfish to NOT give them another sibling to love.

And lastly, this is the thought I'm sure we have all had at one time or another..

Can I love another child the way I love the children I already have?

The answer is yes! Most positively yes!!! How could you not? Once you meet the face of the child you have carried within you for 40 weeks, it's an overwhelming love only a parent can have for a child.

My daughters were so ecstatic about their baby sister the whole time I was pregnant with her. It was so incredible to experience. All the feelings and thoughts I had, seemed so silly.

Having one baby this time has been such an amazing experience. I feel a deeper connection with Carly than I was able to get with my twins when they were this age. My days with them were spent just trying to survive. Going through the same motions. I wouldn't change it though, if I could. Those girls are so incredibly special to me.

I would have 20 children, but that's not really what I want to do. I'm still struggling with having a third child, and balancing it all. Things are getting better, but I have a deep desire to spend more time with my big girls, than what I can. I know in time, it will all fall into place.

I'm so thankful that I didn't listen to those thoughts that rolled around in my head. The, what ifs, the cost, the time and energy, the sacrifices.

For me, it is all worth it. My purpose in this life is to be a mother and to raise my children to know and follow Jesus. I can't think of anything else I would rather do.

Sometimes I ask myself why I waited so long to have another baby. But, I'm really glad I did. Carly has 2 big sisters who adore her, and are such big helpers. And to be honest, I really just wasn't ready yet. The Lord decided it was time though, and I'm so grateful for our latest blessing!

Carly will be 3 months old tomorrow, and they have been 3 fabulous months!!

The Story of Carly's Birth

This is the story of Carly's birth. Have you ever watched A Baby Story on TLC, and seen some of the women who don't even act like they're in labor? Yeah, this story isn't anything like that. ( Some pictures may be a little blurry, as my husband took them. ;) )

A Little Backstory

I had a few crazy days before Carly was born, and it just wouldn't be right to not share them here. I had my 39 week appointment on Thursday and was so upset the baby hadn't been born yet. You can read about my horrible day here. It was really horrible.

The next day, my daughters broke my iPod, which is my lifeline. I literally have to have my music to remain sane. I was so upset. I know its just a possession, but it makes me a happy mama, so I feel that's pretty important.

I had a great friend surprise me with flowers later that day. She knew how emotional and out of my mind I was. That generous act of kindness made my day so much better. My tears of sadness turned to happy tears. I'm still thankful for her.

Later that night, my husband was staining our basement steps, so he could spray lacquer on them the following day. We are chatting away and he says, "what is that smell? It smells like a skunk." I told him I didn't smell anything...yet anyways. A few minutes later I caught whiff of the horrible smell. I set out to find it.

I opened our back door, which leads to our sunroom, which we don't use, that's where our dog sleeps. The smell was disgusting! I quickly realized our dog had been sprayed in the face by a skunk. Poor dog!

I want you to envision me, 5' 1, 39 weeks pregnant, picking up my 40 pound dog to lift her into our 18inch deep bathtub. I can't believe I didn't go into labor right then....back to the story.

On Saturday, my husband set out to spray our steps, so the girls and I headed to my grandparents. The smell would be to much for us to stay home and smell. I left the girls to play for awhile, and I set out to go to Target to walk around, and honestly, I just needed to be alone. I had been in such a grumpy mood, so time alone was much needed.

I picked the girls up later and we made our way back home to our smelly house. The fumes gave me a headache, but I survived.

Sunday morning, Mackenzie woke up complaining her tummy hurt. She ended up vomiting. She had caught the flu her sister had just gotten over. She ended up back asleep in my bed.

I decided to take Taylor to church, while my husband stayed home with Mackenzie. I knew I wouldn't be there the next Sunday, so I didn't want to miss that service. I don't know why I went, really. I was so tired, and miserable. I barely even listened to the sermon because I was just so unhappy.

We came home and I snuggled with Mackenzie. She was still getting sick, and running a fever. I felt so bad for her. I laid on the couch most of the day.  I think I may have even dozed off for a bit...which never happens.

I was making lasagna for dinner, and Mackenzie got sick again. I was in with her when my husband comes running by, headed to get his gun. He ran out the door saying the neighbors dogs were in our chicken house. I took off after him! (No lives were lost this day...dogs or chickens, but a chicken did get drug off by the dog.)

Dinner was not good for me, I just didn't feel well. I ended up on the couch, where I sent my friend a message venting about my feelings and how miserable I was. I'm pretty sure I cried a I sent it.

I decided to go to bed early. I was really feeling awful. I was having lots of diarrhea and I was so afraid I was getting what the girls had. I called my mom for a few minutes and told her what was up. I wanted to let her know I may be needing her help if I was sick. I told her I was praying the baby wouldn't be born tonight...not while the girls were not well, and especially if I was sick! Little did I know what was about to happen...

And labor begins...

I barely slept that night. I got up a few times to go to the bathroom. Around 11 or so, I thought I was going to vomit. Thankfully I didn't. I took a couple tums to see if that would help. I was half asleep, and I kept feeling stomach pains. Mackenzie had vomited in her bed during, so Warren got up to help me with her.

At 2:30, I got up to go to the bathroom again. As I was sitting there, I realized these stomach pains were coming every six minutes. I quickly realized these were contractions. These felt nothing like the braxton hicks I had been feeling for the last 10 weeks. I had to get up and sway my hips to get through them. I woke Warren up and told him we may be going to the hospital really soon. He laid in bed as long as possible.

I started googling....diarrhea and labor.. Yep! A sign labor is beginning.

At 3:30, I was for sure I was in labor. I told Warren to get up, call my brother to come over, and to call my mom. As he was making phone calls, Mackenzie got up again, and threw up all the way to the bathroom. I comforted her, and started cleaning up her vomit. I started contracting again and told Warren he was going to have to take care of it. {My husband does not do vomit well...he has a gag reflex, and well you get the hint.}

It's 4am Monday morning, both girls are awake on the couch, my brother shows up, and we give lots of hugs and kisses, and then we take off for the hospital.

We arrive at 4:30am, and they wheel me to labor and delivery. They do a vaginal exam around 5 to see how far along I was. Still 2cm 75% effaced, just like I was Thursday. I was a bit disappointed, I did not want to be sent home. So they put me on labor watch, and we walked around for an hour. I was still having contractions very regularly.

Sometime between 6-6:30, my new nurse checked me again. I was a 4-5 and 90%. By this time the only way I was comfortable was standing, bent over the bed and breathing through the contractions. I had to stay in the bed for awhile so she could monitor baby and me. I knew to expect this, but I didn't like it!

The doctor came in at 7 to talk with me. I agreed to let him break my water, which I wish I hadn't, but I can't change it now! At this point he checked me again, and I was dilated further. I was progressing so quickly. The pain was getting so bad.

I had originally wanted to do a drug free birth. I wanted to be that tough woman who could do it all, you know? Yeah, not so much.

Everything was happening so quickly. I decided I wanted the epidural. I was in so much pain.

The contractions were coming so fast. I felt so much pressure. I was bent over the bed, doing my best to breathe through each contraction, while Warren pushed on my back. Without him doing that I would have been even more miserable. I barely had time to catch my breath before the next one began.

He was texting someone an update while I was having a contraction. He had only one hand applying pressure. I was in so much pain, I said, "you're only doing it with one hand!!!!" That's the only time I got upset with him during labor. No, "I hate you's" from this girl.

By the time the anesthesiologist came in, I was dilated to a 7. He was trying to quickly give me some relief. I felt him poking the needle in and everything. After he was finally done, I only felt a little relief. I was surprised with this because with my twins I received an epidural, and didn't really feel much.

I laid down to try to rest some, but I felt so much pressure. I could still feel every contraction, but the epidural took some of the edge off. In the mist of all of this, my blood pressure started to really drop. I really don't remember all that they were saying in the room. I didn't even know they were giving me medicine to help with my blood pressure, until several minutes later, I think...

I could hear the anesthesiologist and my nurse talking and watching to see if it was raising. Warren just stayed by my side refreshing my wash cloth. Finally it raised and stabilized. I just tried to rest a bit longer, but I was so tingly from the epidural. I was tingly all the way to the top of my boobs, and I couldn't hardly keep my left eye open.

The anesthesiologist came back in awhile to check on me again and asked how I was. I told him my symptoms. Turns out he had hit a nerve or something...I don't really know. All I know is he moved something and my boobs stopped tingling and I could keep my eye open.

After all this, I was ready to push. I was beyond ready to meet my nameless baby girl. Even though I had an epidural, I felt every single thing...down there. I had read about "the ring of fire". I'm here to tell you, its true. All I could do was keep praying. There was no going back. The only way to get it to stop was well...keep pushing!!!

After an hour of pushing, the doctor laid my beautiful daughter on my chest. That was the most amazing experience. I did not get to experience this with the birth of my twins. It was so healing for my soul to have her immediately in my arms. I felt like I had waited a lifetime to meet her. It was incredible.

She weighed in at 8lbs 4oz and 19 3/4 inches long. She was almost 4lbs bigger than Mackenzie and almost 2 1/2lbs bigger than Taylor. I knew I would have a hard time giving birth to her. She was worth every single tear I shed while pregnant. She looks almost identical to my baby pictures. It's so neat. I got to do skin to skin immediately as well. She wasn't quite ready to nurse at first, and that was ok. She's a nursing champ now.

Her big sisters came quickly to meet her. Mackenzie wore a mask so the baby wouldn't get sick. We asked the girls what their baby sister's name was. They said Carly. That's what they had wanted to name her all along. How neat is that, to be named by your big sisters? We gave her my middle name, Danielle.

Here was our Carly Danielle, so absolutely perfect. I didn't have any complications, or the need for any pain medication afterwards. Carly was so perfect we went home the next day instead of having to stay another night.

I spent the next couple days healing and getting to know this baby I knew nothing about. It was incredible, and just what I needed. After having two previous pregnancies, and the premature birth of my twins, this birth was very healing for me. It mended a lot of pain that I had experienced in the past. My husband was the most amazing coach and so supportive. I could not have done it without him.

Did the birth go exactly how I had imagined? No, but I wouldn't have changed it. It's the story of Carly's birth. I'm so thankful for my three beauties. They are such a blessing to my life!
