Homemade Laundry Detergent

I have had quite a few people ask for my recipe for homemade laundry detergent.  I made mine October 2nd and I still have a bunch left!  It's very easy to make.  It requires a little work, but it pays off in the end.  First you will need the following ingredients:

12 cups Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
8 cups Borax
8 cups baking soda
3 bars of Kirk's Castile Cocoa Soap
3 bars of Fels-Naptha

When I made my soap, I bought 2 boxes of everything.  Whatever you have left over you can make homemade dish washer detergent with too!

Now, you will need a container to combine everything in.  You could use a mop bucket or whatever you have on hand that's large.  I used this:

You will also need a cheese grater.  You will need to grate the soap pretty fine.  I used the next to smallest size on mine.  If you discover any easier way, please let me know!

Simply grate all the soap into the bucket and then measure out all the other ingredients.  Shake or stir to combine.  And there you go.  Laundry Detergent! Use 1-2 Tbsp per load.  I have an HE machine, so I only use 1 Tbsp per load and it does a fine job.

Now this is what I keep some of the soap in so it looks pretty on top of my washing machine:

Now, if you live in Excelsior, all of these ingredients can be found at John's Super.  Sorry Walmart shoppers, you will not be able to find 3 of these ingredients there, or at any other store in this town.  So head on into John's Super today and get your ingredients so you can save a ton of money on laundry detergent!
